CTE’s Southern Fuel Cell Coalition Receives Funding
The Southern Fuel Cell Coalition (SFCC) has received funding for
two years through the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The
funding will support the development of a professional fuel cell
network throughout the southeast, the start-up of three southern
fuel cell demonstration projects in 2005, and a national fuel cell
conference in 2006. The endorsements of Georgia Senators Saxby Chambliss
and Johnny Isakson, together with Alabama Senator Richard Shelby,
were critical in securing the federal support. If funded in the
2006 Appropriations bill, a minimum of five additional fuel cell
demonstration projects will be seeded.
CTE
will administer the SFCC, which is focused on establishing the southern
region as a leader in transportation-related fuel cell research,
demonstration, and commercialization. As a result, the SFCC anticipates
increased political visibility for the south’s fuel cell capacities
and resources, as well as increased funding opportunities for the
ongoing development of the industry.
CTE has recently received approval of the SFCC work
program and has already involved several members in the development
of project teams and white papers. SFCC’s website and promotional
brochure will be completed by late-June and presentations have already
been made to the FuelCellSouth Conference in Columbia, SC and the
FTA’s Electric Drive Bus Program Review in Columbus, OH.
Member Spotlight: SENTECH
Please join us in welcoming SENTECH, Inc., based in Bethesda, MD,
as a new member. Dick Ziegler, CTE board Secretary and Vice President
at SENTECH, has been involved with CTE for many years and has this
to say about his new organization:
“SENTECH is an energy consulting firm providing technical,
analytical, management, and outreach services to public and private
sector clients. Our experienced staff provides clients with technical
evaluations of proposed projects, program plans, and communication
and education activities. We specialize in clean energy storage
technologies, including renewable energy, energy efficiency, and
advanced automotive systems.
Future transportation technologies will have to rely on cleaner
fuels, higher performance materials, and more advanced conventional
and hybrid powertrains. SENTECH works with clients to promote innovative
transportation solutions that will meet such future needs and power
cleaner, more efficient advanced vehicle systems.
SENTECH has received superior performance recognitions for helping
address clients’ needs, for responding to local and national
level issues, and for supporting technical teams of national labs,
automakers, and other stakeholders. Since 2001, SENTECH has coordinated
the Annual Fuel Cell Expo on Capitol Hill to promote the benefits
of fuel cell technologies. The company has organized technical merit
reviews and assisted in preparing national reports like the Fuel
Cell Report to Congress and various five-year Strategic R&D
Program Plans. With these reports, our staff assisted clients in
establishing goals, identifying potential barriers, and establishing
targets to overcome barriers and track progress. For our private
sector clients, we also provide independent assessments of the market
potential of emerging energy technologies through market studies.”

CTE Welcomes Five New Members
In addition to SENTECH, five other organizations
have recently become members of CTE and each will be the subject
of future member spotlights.
The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI)
is the nonprofit, applied research arm of the Georgia Institute
of Technology. GTRI employs some 1,200 employees who perform or
support more than $100 million in research yearly for over 200 clients
in industry and government. Dr. Tom Fuller, Director of the Georgia
Tech Center for Innovative Fuel Cell and Battery Technologies, has
already become involved with CTE’s fuel cell and hydrogen
related activities through the Southern Fuel Cell Coalition. www.gtri.gatech.edu
The Buckhead Area Transit Management Association (BATMA)
is a partnership of private businesses, public agencies, and residential
and civic associations within Atlanta’s Buckhead Community
whose mission is to provide relief for commuters, residents, and
visitors traveling in and around Buckhead. BATMA is one of eight
transportation management associations in the Atlanta region and
is a member of the transportation demand management network that
CTE measures and evaluates for the Georgia Department of Transportation.
CTE has managed the design of "the buc"
shuttle branding, signage, and collateral, as well as the BATMA
website. The discounted member rates for CTE design services was
an important incentive for BATMA’s membership in CTE. www.batma.org
Emory University, in Atlanta, is home
to nine major academic divisions, numerous centers for advanced
study, and a host of prestigious affiliated institutions. In addition
to Emory College, the University encompasses a graduate school of
arts and sciences; professional schools of medicine, theology, law,
nursing, public health, and business; and Oxford College, a two-year
undergraduate division on the original campus of Emory in Oxford,
Ga. Led by President James W Wagner, the University has 11,300 students
and 2,500 faculty members who represent all regions of the United
States and more than 100 foreign nations. CTE is providing design
services for wayfinding signs and maps for Emory’s electric
bus shuttle system, which features vehicles manufactured by CTE
member, Ebus. The discounted member rates for CTE design services
was an important incentive for Emory’s membership in CTE.

Blue Bird Corporation is one of the world's
leading bus manufacturers, delivering thousands of school buses,
commercial buses, and recreational vehicles to the market each year.
Founded in 1927, Blue Bird has nearly 3,000 employees and three
facilities in two countries. Blue Bird has an extensive network
of distributors and service parts facilities throughout North America.
Blue Bird’s interest in the hybrid-diesel and heavy duty fuel
cell vehicle markets makes membership in CTE an excellent strategic
investment for the Fort Valley, GA company. www.blue-bird.com
The John C. Stennis Space Center (SSC)
in South Mississippi is one of ten NASA field centers in the United
States. It is NASA's primary center for testing and proving flight
worthy rocket propulsion systems for the Space Shuttle and future
generations of space vehicles. Because of its important role in
engine testing for four decades, SSC is NASA's program manager for
rocket propulsion testing with total responsibility for conducting
and/or managing all NASA propulsion test programs. SSC is interested
in technology transfer of their hydrogen expertise and is eager
to team with CTE members through the Southern Fuel Cell Coalition.
As noted below, SSC will be the host site of CTE's fall meeting
in September. www.nasa.gov/centers/stennis/
Work Continues on Flywheel Bus Demonstration Project
Working closely with Test Devices, Inc., DRS Technologies, and the
University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Electromechanics,
CTE is seeking federal funding support for a three-year project
to demonstrate next generation flywheel battery technology in heavy-duty
vehicles.
Flywheel battery systems, which store energy through
mechanical rather than chemical means, provide a smaller, more reliable
replacement to chemical battery systems and have a significantly
longer useable life. As a result, flywheel battery systems have
tremendous potential as an enabling technology for fuel cells in
transportation applications.
To fully realize this potential, CTE is proposing
to lead a federally funded research program to bring manufacturers
and university researchers together to develop and demonstrate the
next generation of flywheel battery system technology. Over this
three-year period, the flywheel system will be thoroughly tested
for performance and reliability and then demonstrated on a hybrid
electric bus. The cost of this program is estimated to be $1.5 million
annually over the three-year period, and the total $4.5 million
is being requested in the surface transportation reauthorization,
the Senate’s SAFETEA legislation.
CTE Creative Services Delivers CAP/ADID Annual Report
CTE’s Creative Director, Josh Rosenbaum, recently finished
production of the Central
Atlanta Progress & Atlanta Downtown Improvement District (CAP/ADID)
2004 Annual Report. Josh worked closely with client Wilma Sothern
of
CAP to produce a compelling and beautiful document that highlights
CAP/ADID achievements during the 2004 business year. The report,
filled with illustrative case studies and custom photography, was
impressively unveiled to 1,200 members of the Atlanta business community
at the CAP/ADID Annual Meeting on March 30.
"Having the ability to produce an entire annual
report 'in-house' has proven that CTE creative services are on par
with any big agency out there." says Josh. "We can do
the same quality work faster and cheaper than any of them. For the
CAP annual report we provided the writing, photography, layout...
even negotiated a donation by a major international paper supplier
to get the job done without sacrificing anything in terms of quality
or content," he adds. "And we finished the whole project
a day early!"
Remember, CTE members get discounted rates for creative services, but CTE is happy to provide design and production services to anyone who needs them. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Josh Rosenbaum at josh@cte.tv or call 678-244-4150.
