Clean Cities–Atlanta Names New Coordinator
Clean Cities–Atlanta warmly welcomes Don Francis as its new coordinator. Don recently took early retirement from Georgia Power, but was not quite ready to cast off and go sailing full-time, so he has joined the coalition as its dedicated coordinator. Don is not new to CC-A. He was in attendance at the Georgia Dome in 1993 when CC-A was officially designated as the first Clean Cities Coalition in the nation. He’s been involved with CC-A ever since, including serving on the Board of Directors and as the Treasurer from 2000 to 2005. Don is looking forward to getting reacquainted with old friends from the early days of the coalition as well as working with new stakeholders in the region. Please let Don know if you have any questions about the coalition or would like to become a member of CC-A.

Local Project Receives DOE Clean Cities Grant
to Support
Clean Fuels, Vehicles, and Infrastructure Development
On August 26, 2009, Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the award of 25 cost-share projects under the Clean Cities program to receive nearly $300 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. CC-A is excited to announce that the DeKalb County/Metropolitan Atlanta Alternative Fuel and Advanced Technology Vehicle Project was one of the projects selected to receive funding. The project represents a collaborative effort between DeKalb County, the City of Atlanta, PS Energy, Coca Cola Enterprises, UPS, Emory University, Georgia Tech, and Sustainable Atlanta to advance the production and availability of CNG and the deployment of nearly 200 commercially available light to heavy duty alternative fuel vehicles. The project will serve as a template for the expanded use of locally produced renewable transportation fuel and advanced technology vehicles in a variety of applications.
Congratulations to all the partners in the DeKalb County/Metropolitan Atlanta Alternative Fuel and Advanced Technology Vehicle Project!

Ford’s 2010 Fusion Hybrid Earns “Top Safety Pick”
Ford’s 2010 Fusion Hybrid not only leads the class in fuel economy (offering 41 mpg in the city), it also earned a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Escape Hybrid also earned “Top Safety Pick” honors. In a March press release, Susan Cischke, group vice president with Ford Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering notes “Customers no longer have to choose between fuel efficiency and safety – now they can have both with the Fusion and Escape hybrids.”

Approximately $5.5 million is expected to be available, with $3.5 million for topic area 1 (awards between $50,000 and $200,000 per project) and $2 million for topic area 2 (awards between $250,000 and $1 million per project).
